Like a prize fight, the No. 10 Oak Ridge Wildcats took their licks from the No. 7 West Rebels and gave a few back for 24 minutes of play. Heading into the fourth and final round up 50-48 it looked like the Wildcats had West on the ropes.

Then the Rebel’s rope-a-dope was over.

West went on a 16-6 run to open the fourth quarter to knock out Oak Ridge 75-66 in the Region 2-AAA semifinals and postseason play.

“We missed a few shots,” Oak Ridge coach Aaron Green said. “There was just a three or four minute stretch there in the fourth quarter where they made some plays.”

Phillip Stanford and Otis Little John got back-to-back baskets and a pair of fouls to take a five point lead, and then 6-foot-3 Jajuan Williams buried a pair of 3-pointers in the corner to give West their biggest lead to that point — 64-59.

“Those were back breakers,” coach Green said. “They made those plays and from that point, we didn’t make enough to get it back down.”

The ‘Cats (26-3) sputtered offensively through the second half after holding their own against the taller Rebels (26-4) in the first half. West went into a 2-3 zone for most of the second half that slowed Oak Ridge’s cutting to the basket and put a hand in front of contested 3-pointers.

“Anytime a team goes zone initially, sometimes it takes you a possession or two initially to kind of get a feel,” Green said. “I thought we got good looks. We had the lead going into the fourth quarter.

After their final regular season game against Maryville came down to the waning seconds of the game, Oak Ridge coach Aaron Green didn’t want to leave it to chance in the two teams’ third meeting of the year.

A 20-2 run to open the game put all those fears aside as the Wildcats stormed out to a big lead and never relinquished control to advance to the Region 2-AAA semifinals 64-56, over the Rebels.

“We talked a lot before this game about intensity and getting after it,” coach Green said. “Last time we played here it was 48-46 and you have to give them credit for getting it to their pace.

“We started out pressing them more and got them sped them up … made them play a little bit faster than they wanted to, and ultimately, I think that was the difference in the game.”

The ‘Cats defense held firm at all positions as the Rebels fought for every inch of the court and couldn’t find a way to tear the lid off the rim. Maryville (13-18) hit their first bucket two and a half minutes in, but didn’t get their second until Stian Romberg hit a 3-pointer with 5:40 left in the second quarter.

“Without question, I thought that was one of our best defensive efforts in the first half,” Green said. “Overall the on-the-ball defense was good, the post defense was good, positioning was good and the effort and intensity was good.”

The Wildcats are District 3-AAA champs again.

With time winding down, coach Aaron Green told his team to clear a path for Lonnie McClanahan. The senior drove down the right side of the lane, put up a running shot that dropped.

Central’s long desperation heave fell short and McClanahan took away MVP honors as Oak Ridge defeated Central 62-61 Tuesday.

“We cleared out that side and let him drive and make a play,” coach Green said after leading the ‘Cats to their third 3-AAA tournament title in four years.

Oak Ridge (25-2) — down by one — watched as the Bobcat’s Dre Mathieu missed the front end of a 1-and-1 off the side of the rim with 24.6 seconds. The Wildcats came down and set up a play for McClanhan.

“We just cleared out that side and put Cory (Fagan) over in the corner,” Green said. “I told Lonnie if you drive and they converge, and you can’t get there, don’t force up a bad one. Put it right there to a guy that shoots 47-48 percent, and we will take our chances.”

Central (24-6) did converge, leaving Fagan open but his shot missed off the back side and was tipped out of bounds.

Oak Ridge went to their standard inbound play, and McClanahan made it happen.

The senior led all scorers with 19 points, but he said his rebounds and the teams’ committment to cleaning up the glass was the difference.

KARNS — As the halftime approached, Oak Ridge coach Aaron Green and his staff saw a tired Karns team gripping tight to a 25-23 lead.

“We noticed as a staff that (Karns) got really tired there at the end of the second half,” he said. “They got after it early in the third, but we continued to wear at them a little bit.”

The Wildcats’ defensive pressure wore down the Beavers as they pulled away at the free-throw line to get the 65-46 win in the District 3-AAA semifinals.

Oak Ridge (24-2) shot a staggering 22 of 27 from the line — 16 of 18 in the fourth quarter.

“We spend a lot of time on it,” coach Green said. “We have made some big free throws in the last three or four weeks. I think that has given our guys a lot of confidence. If you have guys that can go to the line and extend the lead, that’s huge.”

The lead was its largest at the end of the night after not getting over five for the whole first half. The two teams fought back and forth as the game featured six ties and five lead changes early.

Lonnie McClanahan and Spencer Shoffner kept it close for Oak Ridge. The duo scored 22 of the teams 25 points by halftime.

Oak Ridge coach Aaron Green is glad his Wildcats played against Maryville on Monday. Even if it was the lowest scoring game of the season.

Stian Romberg put a 3-pointer from the top of the key that fell off the front of the rim as time expired — Oak Ridge survived 48-46.

“This is a great game to play right now,” coach Green said. “(The way Maryville played) that’s how some of the teams in the district or first round of the region are going to play us.”

The Rebels (12-15) defense suffocated the unusually cold-shooting ‘Cats for most of the game with a mix of zone and man and executed deep into their own offense. Oak Ridge chased Maryville on the defensive end through screens and picks.

Offensively the ‘Cats just couldn’t buy a basket or an offensive rebound.

“They had Bearden beat, at Bearden, about two weeks ago and they lost by five,” coach Green said of the Rebels. “They’re a type of team that they’re going to grind you down and make it a halfcourt game.

“And we were 3 for 17 from three so they never had to extend on us. It just kept getting tighter and tighter (on our offense). They did a good job defensively.”

Despite the tough sledding on the offensive end, Oak Ridge kept their cool and neither team could get a lead bigger than six throughout the game. With three and a half minutes left, it looked like Maryville would pull away.
